"Gaineser"

I swear I had a couple of things that I wanted to post on here over the last couple of days but I cannot for the life of me remember what they were. I guess I’ll start with a Gaines update.

That child just has no desire to eat. He only acts hungry when he’s taking steroids for a cold. He does ok with his bottles once you get them in his mouth but he cries and fights you until you get it in there. We’ve also been back to pushing baby foods and I have to fight to get a half baby food down him. And by fight I mean either force his mouth open with a spoon or wait for him to cry and shove a bite in. I feel like that’s not the right way to be doing things but I don’t know what else to do. Now he’s taken to just leaving his mouth wide open with a bite of food in it. He’s kind of like, “Fine, you got it in but I’m not swallowing it”. It’s just a mess…I don’t know what to do. I know he needs to experience new textures to get over his aversion to them but it is just such a fight with him. I think we are both physically exhausted after each meal.

Other than the feeding, he’s a sweet and happy boy. He’s learning to clap and say and wave “bye bye”…I wouldn’t call them mastered tasks but he’s working on them. He was super happy to see Ms. Kristen yesterday after she’d been away for a week. I didn’t see it but Beau said he just loved on her and had a huge smile on his face when she picked him up.

Oh…Reed has taken to calling Gaines “Gaineser”. I’ve called him that here and there but now that’s pretty much how Reed refers to him regularly. He’ll say, “Mama, Gainser is touching me” or “NO! Gainser…NO!” because he’s touching his scooter or something. Also, all of a sudden, Beau and I are no longer, Mama and Daddy…we are now Mom and Dad. Beau was Dad first which I thought was kind of funny until I became Mom and then I wasn’t as impressed. I laughed so hard Saturday morning at him. Beau was eating breakfast and Reed crawled in his lap and said, “Dad, you wanna share your cereal with me?” Obviously Beau didn’t really want to “share” his cereal but due to the “share” word being brought out, he pretty much had to. I hurried up and ate mine because I really do not like to share my food. Happy to fix/order you your own, but don’t expect any of mine. And if I do decide to share my food with you, you better believe you are getting the lesser fries, chips, brownie piece etc. Not the premium ones. Is that selfish? Probably. We won’t dwell on that.

Look at this picture of my boys. People always ask who Gaines looks like. I think you can tell from this picture.

Also, you know how I said the other day that I had no problem getting Reed to go to sleep? Check out these pictures from last night. We found him asleep in his floor. Two nights before, we barely found him asleep under the dining room table. I’d been in and out of the dining room for two hours and finally saw two little feet sticking out. Reed was just as asleep as he could be.

Ok…I think that’s it for now. I’m not exactly posting these things every day but I’m doing better than once a week!

Love to all,

Brittany

Is he on reflux meds? I know that when our little guy was taking Prevacid (Solutabs) they killed his appetite and made every feeding a struggle. We stopped them and started him on Nexium and his appetite reappeared quickly. We found out later that some PPI's have a reputation for causing appetite issues. I don't know if any of this would apply to you, but thought I'd throw it out there, just in case :)

Our daughter has had reflux and really struggled with the weight issue as a result. Our doctor put her on an appetite stimulate. She has been on it for 3 months now and has jumped up the percentile chart by 15%. It has been absolutely amazing. I don't know if they would ever consider that for Gaines. Our other daughter is probably going to start those meds soon as well because of the same issues. I can't believe how much her appetite improved on that med. I don't know if it would interfere with his other meds. The one my daughter is on is an antihistamine. There is another one that is steroid based. I will be praying that he starts eating. I truly know how frustrating that subject can be. I get frustrated, but then I think it makes it worse. =(

My daughter was like Gaines and just WOULD NOT eat, we tube fed her for a long time and on her 3rd birthday she had a pylorectomy (sp?). Babies that have pyloric stenosis will die by 9 weeks of age without surgery. She was 3 years old!!!! She got a little better after surgery but sat under the 3rd percentile until she was about 8 years old. She was just not into food, had no energy and could no longer go to school. She suffers from migraines and was put on Periactin- a side affect is increased appetite. Low and behold she is at a normal weight gain for the first time in her life. She's now nearly ten. I hope Gaines finds his way with food a little earlier than my daughter did. I feel your pain and worry with him not eating. Sending prayers your way. Kathy

Wow, I am thankful that you wrote this post and that others have commented.
My youngest is almost 15months old. He has pretty severe reflux, chronic ear infections, and pretty bad asthma. And, he doesn't eat! Until the other day when we put him on an appitite enhancer he was exclusively breastfed. We really had no choice as he didn't eat. He hasn't grown in a long time but is so happy and active. He is going to be having a number of tests done to see if there are any internal issues going on as well as having his adenoids taken out.
This has been such a new and stressful thing for us to deal with. I can totally understand your worry and frustration! It has driven me to tears more then a few times.
You are not alone, I am not alone, thankfully we both know that now!
